The orphanage in Lodwar - continued

T
wenty children were moved to Eldoret in 2005 and began their schooling, living with families in the area. Following the outbreak of violence after the Presidential election in January 2008, this plan was put on hold as the children were much safer in their own homeland, and the twenty children from the orphanage were returned there.

During 2009 places were found in Government boarding schools for most of the 50 orphans, leaving the 120 non-resident children to come into the compound each day for what is effectively nursery level education and two good meals a day. The Kenyan Trustees of the project then considered whether to transfer this facility to another, local charity and sever the connection with Lodwar so far as provision for children was concerned.

However, it has now been found that not all the orphans are well placed in school, and the current plan is for 15 children to come to the Eldoret school in January 2010, living permanently in the school as boarders. The local branch of Christian Outreach Ministries, the church to which this project belongs, will continue to support and run the Lodwar nursery school and the 120 children currently there will remain under our protection and receiving maintenance from FKC.

It does seem that for the foreseeable future this is the very best solution for all the children, and the plan remains to continue bringing Lodwar children to Eldoret as opportunity arises and when it seems right for each child.
