The children of Lodwar 2009 (9)

The children in the photograph are all orphans or destitute children cared for in the Lodwar orphanage. Some of the original 180 children have been settled into Government boarding schools in the region, they are permanently resident in school, and the Pastor responsible for the work of Christian Outreach Ministries in the region also oversees the children’s work, and therefore has responsibility for the well being and happiness of these children.

The children at Lodwar

There remain in the orphanage many children who need permanent placement in school and who have no relatives in the Lodwar region and therefore no over riding reason to remain there. It is hoped that one day, all these children will be able to move to Eldoret, but for a start, 15 children will move this January in order to join the school at the start of the new term. They will board at the school permanently and additional staff have been employed to care for them. A teacher from the orphanage staff will also transfer to Eldoret as support for the children while they settle in and learn both English, in which they are taught, and Swahili, the local language. The teacher will receive basic training towards qualification as a teacher in due course.
